Hair Today Gone Tomorrow Hair Appeal

Hair Today Gone Tomorrow hair appeal on Thursday 20th May, I am getting my head shaved to raise the profile of Matter of Trust and raise money in aid of WWF and would really appreciate your support: http://www.justgiving.com/hairappeal

All hair from the salon and my head shave will be used to help fight the oil slick that is threatened near the Gulf of Mexico. The hair collected at Johnsons Hairdressers, 64 Cathays Terrace, Cardiff will be sent to Matter of Trust a charity which links up recycled goods with causes that need them.

The Trust is co-coordinating the collection of hair, fur and tights which are needed to make booms and mats to mop up the oily mess spewing out of the sunken Deepwater Horizon oil platform which is lying on the seabed of the Gulf of Mexico. Hair and fur will typically soak up around four to six times their weight in oil.

Not only will the hair be put to good use any donations will help the WWF with their work to protect endangered wildlife and environments. Any donations would be gratefully appreciated.

I am encouraging students and residents to appeal to their hair salon to participate in sending hair to Matter of Trust and also shave their heads/have their hair cut to help.
Johnsons hairdressers is giving everyone the opportunity to join in the campaign by offering free head shaves Thursday 27th May. Anyone interested should contact me (02920871808) or the hairdressers directly.
Appeal and petition your hair salon to participate in sending hair to Matter of Trust. I have a template letter you can use.
Any hair salon that would like details can contact Kieran who will be writing to hair salons across Cardiff with a ‘hair’ appeal.
Many thanks
Kieran x x

“ITS ONLY CHARITY BAGS AND OLD CLOTHING!!”

The reality is:

£4 – 5 million pounds per year in the South Wales area is being made by
Organised Crime Groups as a result of the theft of Charity Bags.

This type of crime affects the genuine charities that carry out positive work for the elderly, ill and disadvantaged children and the disruption of these Organised Crime Groups is a positive way of ensuring they receive the funding intended by those who fill the bags. The loss of income to legitimate charities resulting from this type of crime runs into the millions!

A recent rogue trader operation resulted in three suspected members of an Organised Crime Group being arrested and upon searching their vehicle it contained bags from four different charities.

Information led to another arrest of a person who is making 75p per charity bag collected

Your intelligence reports have made a difference!

The next Rogue Trader week commences TODAY, and further intelligence is required.

In light of this, please can I again ask for your support by providing the following information to the Rogue Trader inbox? roguetrader@south-wales.pnn.police.uk

Name of Charity (on collection bags)
Street Name
Town
Postcode
Collection Day
Details of any vehicles used to collect or deliver charity bags

ELECTORAL REGISTER FOR STUDENTS

On 6 May a Parliamentary general election will be held throughout the UK. On the same day, local council elections will be held in some areas of England.

Students may be able to register at home and at their term-time address. So wherever you are on election day, you can have your say.

If you haven’t registered – it’ simple - there are numerous ways you can do this. The easiest being by completing the form online at http://www.aboutmyvote.co.uk/. Once completed and signed you can send it to Electoral Services, County Hall, Atlantic Wharf, Cardiff, CF10 4UW and you will be registered.

If you don’t have access to the online form and haven’t already received a registration form then you can request one be sent to your address for completion by calling Electoral Services on 02920872034.

It is important to register otherwise you will not be able to vote and it will affect your credit rating. This is because by law we must provide the register to credit reference agencies and they check the information whenever you open an account or make a purchase by deferred payments.

Can I vote twice, at home and at uni?

You can’t vote twice in:

a UK Parliamentary, Scottish Parliamentary, National Assembly for Wales or European Parliamentary election.

But you can vote in local government elections at home and at your term-time address, as long as they are not in the same local government area.

ENFORCEMENT ACTION IN CATHAYS CLEAN-UP

A new campaign aimed at keeping Cathays clean and waste-free is continuing.

Following initial education activities and an announcement of a zero tolerance policy on February 24, enforcement teams and education officers have been intensifying their efforts in the area.

As a result of this 129 Fixed Penalty Notices have been issued for offences including placement of waste, items wrongly put in recycling and waste put out for collection on the wrong day.

Streets with the highest number of previously identified waste-related issues have been monitored closely during the clean-up campaign and education officers have spoken to hundreds of residents here, both before and after the campaign began, while also leaving leaflets at every household in Cathays.

Guidelines for waste collection are as follows:

• Waste should be placed on the kerbside by 6am on the day of collection but no earlier than 4pm the day before.
• Waste should be placed out in the correct bin/bag:-
o Green Wheeled Bins: These are for compostable garden and food waste only and can be placed out for collection weekly. Green bags MUST NOT be placed in green bins.
o Black Wheeled Bins: These are for all non-recyclable waste and can be placed out for collection weekly. All general waste bags must be contained within this bin and the lid must be closed. Any waste placed at the side of the bin or on top of the bin will not be collected.
o Green Bags: These are for recyclables only and should be placed out for collection fortnightly. Green Bags MUST NOT be used for general waste.
• Bins must be taken back in by 9am the day after collection
• Wheeled bins and green bags should be stored within property boundaries on days other than collection day.
• Frontages should be kept tidy; free of litter and loose waste.
• The above rules apply to everyone in the property.

Residents’ questions or concerns about this process, or any other issues relating to waste collection, should be addressed to Connect 2 Cardiff on 02920 872087.

Executive Member for Environment Councillor Margaret Jones said: “Our education and enforcement officers have been working hard to make sure everyone understands the guidelines in place and does their best to adhere to them. The clean-up campaign gives residents in Cathays an excellent opportunity to work from a clean slate, take ownership for their waste and maintain an excellent local environment.”

Litter Love

A lot of litter – not a lot of love

On Friday 12th February, in the run-up to Valentines Day, Litter Love offered people the opportunity to find their perfect ‘carbon’ date. 15 student volunteers litter picked along Colum road and Cathays collecting over 17 bags of rubbish, nine filled with recyclables and eight general waste.

Organised by Kieran McCann, Student Liaison Officer in collaboration with Tidy Towns the event included the first ever speed dating litter pick.

Volunteers who took part in the speed dating litter pick asked their dates a series of questions to find out who was their perfect carbon date. If their prospective date answered mostly A, B, C or D they were given the carbon status:

A - Green god/goddess
B - Eco-warrior in training
C - Polluter
D - Carbon craver

Potential dates were matched on their compatibility score and pledged to reduce their carbon footprint by 10% in 2010. Example questions included:

Your car is….?

a. Car what car, it’s called a bike

b. Traded in and now disguised as a bus

c. My pride and joy and a little run around

d. Over there jump in it’s the BMW parked there

When offered a plastic bag do you?

a. Pull out your bag-for-life and skip away

b. Take one but re-use it next time

c. Use it and throw it away

d. Ask for another and double bag your goods

You need a new outfit for our date do you?

a. Re-fashion and stitch something from old clothes

b. Hit the charity shops and swap shops

c. Turn to the high street for your fix

d. Go designer darling with added fur

Indeg Jones, Tidy Towns Officer, said: “It was a great day. Everyone got into the spirit of it and although nobody found love we found plenty of litter.”

Cardiff Council’s Student Liaison Officer, Kieran McCann said: “Thank you to all the volunteers and their enthusiasm for litter love, although there was sadly no potential future litter love marriages or rubbish romances I’m glad everyone enjoyed the novelty of the day. We contributed to cleaning up our community and encouraged people to think about climate change in a unique way.”

Zain Khan a student volunteer who participated on the day said: “It was unbelievable how much litter we collected. The whole experience was fun but the best part was people passing by giving us a thumbs-up and acknowledging our work to help clean up Cathays.”

LITTER LOVE: How can you refuse?

On Friday 12th February, in the run-up to Valentines Day, Litter Love is offering people the opportunity to find their perfect ‘carbon’ date.

Cardiff Council’s Student Liaison Officer, Kieran McCann has teamed up with Tidy Towns during Go Green Week in a bid to clean up Cathays and encourage people to ‘fall in love with your climate’. Kieran is hoping to attract volunteers, single or attached, to assist with a litter pick.

The event includes a free option to join the first ever Speed Dating Litter Pick. This works just like any speed dating event, but with a tiny twist….you get matched up for your dates according to your carbon footprint. Picking in pairs you get two minutes to impress before volunteers switch around. You get to have a great time, meet some new people, and hopefully find somebody you want to reduce your carbon footprint with at the end of the day!

Councillor Judith Woodman, Deputy Leader, Communities, Housing and Social Justice said: “I hope people will enjoy this fun event whilst benefitting the local community. This initiative will help reduce litter on our streets as well as encouraging people to think about climate change.”

Indeg Jones, Cardiff Tidy Towns Officer for Keep Wales Tidy, said: “Litter on our streets is a serious problem but by bringing an element of fun and possibly romance to the equation people might be more encouraged to get out there and join in. A speed dating litter pick is a first for Keep Wales Tidy and we are hoping the whole event will be littered with love.”

Volunteers should meet at Cardiff Students Union, Senghennydd Road at 3pm on Friday 12th February.

All equipment for the litter pick will be provided including litter pickers, bin liners, guidelines and a safety talk will be provided. Please bring your own gloves, waterproofs and sensible footwear.

BUY NOTHING DAY LITTER PICK IS A SUCCESS

On Saturday November 28th Buy Nothing Day 2009 was celebrated with an organized litter pick led by Student Liaison Officer Kieran McCann supported by Tidy Towns.

Over the course of the day over 35 bags of waste was collected by 15 community volunteers who concentrated their pick along the Taff embankment.

Volunteers aged from 9 year upwards picked up an assortment of waste that had been discarded and littered the bank side. Waste including a discarded bike, three chairs, a mop, carpet, umbrellas was removed, the group found a wallet containing a driving license and ID which was handed to police plus lots and lots of crisp packets, plastic bags, cans, general refuse and some more undesirable items.

Using 8ft and 10ft litter picks to reach the often ignored, but highly littered areas along the bank they tackled the brambles and freed the waste helping clean up the area.

On one of the year's busiest shopping days, ‘Buy Nothing Day’ asked people to stop shopping - for a whole day! The day gave everyone a chance to step off the treadmill and really think about what we are consuming and the environmental consequences.

Kieran McCann, Student Liaison Officer who organized the event said:

“My sincere thanks to the volunteers who helped make this day such a success. The rubbish that we were picking up was evidence of how wasteful our society is. We were shocked at what had been discarded and littered the Taff. Spending a day without spending allowed us to consider the environmental and aesthetic impacts that over-consumption and the waste produced has on our communities. Buy Nothing Day helped us to make a commitment to consuming less, recycling more and making more ethical and environmentally aware consumer choices”.

Councillor Judith Woodman, Executive Member for Communities said: “Buy Nothing Day highlights the environmental effects of consumption. Over the Festive Season we'll throw away over 125,000 tonnes of plastic packaging, 6 million Christmas trees and 83 square km of wrapping paper. I would urge everyone to think about their about their consumption habits and consider recycling wherever possible.”

Special thanks to Indeg Jones for organizing the equipment, giving a safety talk and organizing the collection of our collected waste.
